What happens when an ordinary but honest man gets elected president? "Servant of the People" is a hilarious comedy series that answers this question and launched the real-life political career of creator Volodymyr Zelensky, who was elected President of Ukraine in April 2019.

Modest teacher Vasily is caught on camera ranting about his country's miserable situation. When a pupil posts the video on YouTube, it becomes a viral sensation. Everybody loves Vasily's outrage, and people start funding a presidential campaign for him, which he wins! The series follows Vasily's new life as president; he wants to stay the same, live in his flat with his parents, borrow money from friends, and bike to work, even though his work is now as the most powerful man in the country.

"Servant of the People" was a record breaker for channel 1+1 in Ukraine, and a feature film was also made. Following its success, Zelensky announced his candidacy for the 2019 presidential election, winning in a landslide on a platform promising an end to corruption.
