The Pretender
1926. The New Economic Policy in the USSR is in full swing. A provincial swindler, Mikhail Rodionov - nicknamed the Orphan - is on the run from local gangsters to Leningrad. Following an accident in the street he finds himself mistaken for a new investigator, the man who was supposed to head the Criminal Investigation Department. Mikhail first plans to make a swift exit before his true identity is revealed, but he decides not to hurry after discovering a police warehouse full of expensive evidence and confiscated property. With his new ID this will be like taking candy from a baby! So he plans a robbery. However, things change. While blending in on the police unit, his criminal skills help him to solve the most complicated cases with ease and his department quickly becomes known as the sharpest in the city. A pretty young investigator Anna, falls in love with this successful man and he feels the same way about her. Mikhail enjoys his new life and decides to break with his shady past. But when gangsters get wind of the warehouse and its treasures, they see that they are not ready to part with their former “brother” and they track him down…
